I usually stay at home during the pandemic, often look up the sky, and photograph it. I normally use iPhone camera. My photographic technique is simple and straightforward. When a subject presents visual possibilities, I seek the most revealing camera position. At the split-second, when the form, lighting and the expression are one, I release the shutter. On the screen I have an alluring image of the sky captured by a mechanical eye. I print it out, ask myself whether this sky presents the same sky I looked up at that moment. The printed sky is compressed potentially endless depth into a finite and delimited plane, remains utterly flat. I appropriate this photograph as an expanded medium for an artwork. Through the physical process given materiality of the support and flatness, I make that a photographic surface in square form into photographic space where is able to experience and to imagine. The decisive part of the my creative process takes place not in the mechanism in my hands, but in the vision in my head; in the right eye which looks out onto the exterior world and the left eye which looks inside to my personal world. The vision fuses on what I see, where and when and how I feel about it. When paper is torn, it gains connotations which unmarked material lack. The visual composition of this work - torn and folded sky, a broken tiny object - is determined at the peak of emotional intensity. 13/01/21 Sunyoung Park
